With generous amounts of good luck and good times, 50 First Dates set an all-time box office record for opening weekend of a romantic comedy, if it deserves such a windfall is another matter. This is a vehicle for mild natural soft natural stars Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore, and their history with The Wedding Singer no doubt factors in its application Lowbrow. But while the well-matched lovebirds fight with a tricky plot (no short term memory, so that has to treat each meeting is the first), director Peter Segal (who directed Sandler in Anger Management) ignores the intriguing potential of their situation (think Memento meets Groundhog Day) and peppers the proceedings with the kind of humor that young Sandler fans expect. The movie sneaks in a few moments with his sincere inviting Hawaiian locations, and that training walrus charm impressive, but there is no shake the feeling that too many good opportunities
