Essential video David O. Selznick wanted Gone with the wind a little 'of a film, a film that would broaden the very idea of what could be a film and not like. In many ways, he got what he worked hard to achieve in this 1939 epic (and all-time box office area in terms of tickets sold) and, in some respects, is far from the lens. While the first half of this tragedy was the civil war and taut suspense and nostalgic, the second is ramshackle and arbitrary. But there is no doubt that the film was a huge success in terms of all resources - the art direction, color, sound, image - to be pushed to new limits for the greater glory of telling a story America and to the fullest extent possible. Vivien Leigh is still magnificently narcissistic, Olivia de Havilland angelic and lovely, Leslie Howard reckless and aristocratic. As for Clark Gable is one of the most vital, masculine performances ever in the film. - Tom Keogh
